    RENT

    Theatr Brycheiniog

    Community l Cymuned

Set in New York City’s East Village during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis, RENT is a powerful, gritty, and uplifting rock musical that explores love, loss, friendship, and the fight to live fully — no matter the odds. Based loosely on Puccini’s La Bohème, Jonathan Larson’s iconic work follows a group of struggling artists and outcasts trying to make their mark while facing the harsh realities of poverty, addiction, and illness.

With unforgettable songs like Seasons of Love, La Vie Bohème, and Take Me or Leave Me, RENT bursts with raw emotion and passion. This Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical has touched hearts worldwide and continues to speak to new generations with its message of hope, resilience, and the power of chosen family.

Brecon Little Theatre brings RENT to life in a bold new production that honours the spirit of the original while showcasing local talent and heart. Join us for an unforgettable night of music and meaning — and experience a story that reminds us all to measure our lives in love.

PLEASE NOTE: The performance on Thursday 9th October is an OPEN DRESS REHEARSAL

This is a full preview of the show that allows the cast and crew an opportunity to fine-tune the performance ahead of opening night on Friday 10th October. Audiences should expect occasional pauses, technical adjustments and/or last-minute changes,

    CONTENT & TRIGGER WARNINGS:

RENT contains mature themes, including drug use, sexuality, strong language, and references to HIV/AIDS. While it carries an important and heartfelt message, it may not be suitable for young children.

We recommend this production for audiences aged 14 and over, with parental discretion advised for younger teens.

Julian Podger, Rachel Podger, Brecon Baroque, Brecon Baroque Festival Choir

    Brecon Cathedral

This year’s opening concert in Brecon Cathedral, A Pageant of Psalms, is directed by Julian Podger and features Rachel Podger, Brecon Baroque, Brecon Baroque Festival Choir and the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble.

A Pageant of Psalms is a musical sequence based on the Roman Catholic vespers rite which had five psalms, a hymn and a magnificat. Each psalm would have been preceded by a plainchant antiphon, repeated after the psalm, though this repeat was often replaced with an instrumental piece, especially at high feasts.

This programme “translates” the old rite into a fictional Lutheran one, with its psalms, hymn and magnificat in German rather than the Latin of older times. Some Latin elements, plainchant and antiphons and two motets written a couple of generations earlier - and in the “prima practica’ style - are included for historical background.

    Brecon Town

    Brecon Town Walk

Join Emma Hayes, one of Brecon’s White Badge Town Tour Guides, for a short walk through the historic market town of Brecon.

Brecon has roots stretching back to the Iron Age, with nearby hillforts like Pen-y-Crug reflecting its early tribal settlements. During the Roman era, a fort at nearby Y Gaer marked its strategic importance, and in the 11th century, the Normans established a castle that spurred the town’s development. Brecon became a religious centre with the founding of a priory that later became Brecon Cathedral, and it also played a key role in Wales’s rich Nonconformist tradition. In the Georgian era, the town prospered as an administrative and commercial hub, with elegant buildings and improved infrastructure. Brecon also has a proud military history, notably as the home of the South Wales Borderers, famed for their role at Rorke’s Drift in 1879; their legacy lives on at the town’s Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh.

Meeting place: Visit Brecon, Lion Yard, LD3 7BA

Queen James: The Life and Loves of Britain’s First King

A talk by the book’s author, Gareth Russell

The Tithe Barn, Brecon Cathedral Close

James Stuart, King of England, Scotland, and Ireland did not always love wisely, but he never failed to do so boldly.

He fell in love three times – with a Scottish lord, a knight and George Villiers, ‘the handsomest man in the whole world’. He was infatuated three more times – with a Highland earl, a Welsh lord and an English spy.

We know so much about the six wives of Henry VIII, why not the six loves of James I?

This groundbreaking new book puts James – genius, liar, spendthrift, idealist, witch-hunter – and the men he loved at the centre of one of the most dramatic stories in British royal history.

    Rachel Podger and Brecon Baroque

    Theatr Brycheiniog

Rachel Podger and Brecon Baroque take the resurgence of the Arts in England post-1660 as the inspiration for The Muses Restor’d, violin-led chamber music from Jacobean to Early Georgian England.

The Muses Restor’d uncovers little known glories of English chamber music and its influences with works by Handel, Lawes, Blow, Locke, Purcell, Schop, Jenkins, Baltzar and Jones. The violin joins a plethora of keyboards, lutes and bass viol reinstating these sonatas, fantasies, suites, grounds and popular tunes to the mainstream of English cultural life of the time.

Rachel is joined by lutenist Elizabeth Kenny (pictured), viola da gamba player Jonathan Rees and keyboardist James Johnstone.

The Muses Restor’d album on the Channel Classics label was ‘Editor's Choice’ in Gramophone Magazine; Presto’s ‘Recording of the Week’; and a ‘Chamber Choice’ in BBC Music Magazine. Additionally, it was a finalist in the 2024 International Classical Music Awards and nominated for the Baroque Instrumental category in 2025.   See below for a short video of Rachel performing Francesco Geminiani’s Auld Bob Morrice from the album.

A concert not to be missed.

Alongside painting, he taught art and helped establish the Bangor Art Foundation course. He exhibited widely and received several awards, including from the Welsh Arts Council and National Eisteddfod.

    LA SONNAMBULA

    Synopsis:

Following triumphant Met turns in Roméo et Juliette, La Traviata, and Lucia di Lammermoor, Nadine Sierra summits another peak of the soprano repertoire as Amina, who sleepwalks her way into audiences’ hearts in Bellini’s poignant tale of love lost and found. In his new production, Rolando Villazón—the tenor who has embarked on a brilliant second career as a director—retains the opera’s original setting in the Swiss Alps but uses its somnambulant plot to explore the emotional and psychological valleys of the mind. Tenor Xabier Anduaga returns after his acclaimed 2023 Met debut in L’Elisir d’Amore, co-starring as Amina’s fiancé Elvino, alongside soprano Sydney Mancasola as her rival, Lisa, and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Count Rodolfo. Riccardo Frizza takes the podium for one of opera’s most ravishing works.

A new comedy by Richard Tunley

After binge-watching Who Do You Think You Are? Count Dracula becomes convinced he’s got royal blood—thanks to a dubious link between Vlad the Impaler and the Prince of Wales. So, he orders a flat-pack coffin off Temu, books himself an Airbnb, and sets off for the Black Forest… only to land in Blackwood in the South Wales Valleys!

At first, the locals think he’s just another eccentric in a cape. But when people start mysteriously disappearing and pest control is called to investigate a sudden bat problem, the town begins to wonder if their odd new visitor is more than just a lost tourist...

A fang-filled spoof bursting with laughs, Valleys pride, and a touch of garlic. A comedy about identity, heritage, and what it really means to be Welsh.

Brought to you by Black RAT Productions—masters of fast-paced, funny, and fearsomely good theatre.

Mrs. Warren’s Profession by Bernard Shaw

    directed by Dominic Cooke

Five-time Olivier Award winner Imelda Staunton (The Crown) joins forces with her real-life daughter Bessie Carter (Bridgerton) for the very first time, playing mother and daughter in Bernard Shaw’s incendiary moral classic.

Vivie Warren is a woman ahead of her time. Her mother, however, is a product of that old patriarchal order. Exploiting it has earned Mrs. Warren a fortune – but at what cost?

Filmed live from the West End, this new production reunites Staunton with director Dominic Cooke (Follies, Good), exploring the clash between morality and independence, traditions and progress.

HOUSEHOLD is a heartfelt, quietly powerful, and sometimes funny exploration of what happens after the honeymoon fades. Told through movement, rhythm, and raw physicality, this one-hour double bill invites you behind closed doors to witness two couples navigating the beautiful, awkward, and everyday reality of sharing a home. Set within a striking house structure, HOUSEHOLD blends dance, gesture, and script to tell two distinct stories. Created by a Welsh LGBTQ+ team and designed with D/deaf and multilingual audiences in mind, the performers speak throughout the show, but their voices are not heard. Instead, the story is told through action, not dialogue. Morning routines, gentle habits, and small disagreements left unsaid. The pauses between conversations, the comfort of familiarity, and the quiet effort it takes to stay connected when life becomes ordinary. These unremarkable days slowly become everything because sometimes, the most intimate moments are the ones no one else sees. Tender, relatable, and quietly bold, HOUSEHOLD invites you to see the beauty in the everyday.

Craig’s also a remarkable singer, and to celebrate the release of his debut solo album – and new book, Revelations - he’ll reveal his own, hidden talent during a Fab-U-Lous night of big songs, tall tales, and glamour. Expect dancing, tales from Strictly Come Dancing, songs, plenty of laughs – and, yes, an unexpected cookery demonstration. Revelations is the show that keeps giving for fans of dance, music, comedy, and the nation’s best-loved dance show.
