    Three Men In A Boat

    Theatr Brycheiniog

After the huge success of Old Herbaceous, Kick In The Head productions are back with a rip roaring barrel of fun, Three Men in a Boat, with Giles Shenton (Old Herbaceous himself!) playing the part of Jerome K Jerome.
Join Jerome as he recounts the hilarious story of his boating holiday along the magnificent River Thames with his two companions and Montmorency the dog. Come and join in the fun as Giles Shenton expertly takes the helm and pilots you through the ridiculous tale of men behaving badly while messing about in boats!

“There are a few seriously funny books that remain great for all time. Three Men in a Boat is one of these” The Guardian

    “Timeless appeal” The Independent

“Pitch-perfect comedy about, well, three men in a boat” The Telegraph

Giles Shenton "creates an instant rapport with the audience, drawing us into his world and making the characters in it so real we feel you have known them forever. " Edinburgh Fringe Review

"Skilfully distilled from Jerome K. Jerome’s comic masterpiece into 95 minutes of pure delight. To those who wondered if the same team could live up to the earlier success of Old Herbaceous, the answer was an emphatic yes. A master class in confidence, stagecraft and delivery." Opening Night Review

“The nearest thing to "audio slapstick" I've ever heard, culminating in the sublime comedy of opening a tin, when you've forgotten the tin opener. It is not often that you come out of a theatrical performance feeling like you've been sharing happy and hilarious times, safe from a cruel world & wrapped in a warm blanket.” Vera Fletcher Review

    Theatr Brycheiniog

    Theatre | Theatr

Chekhov is one of the great writers of the 19th Century and these tales remain as memorable and bracing as jumping into a cold plunge pool after a hot sauna!

Featuring original live music and stylish ensemble story-telling, In and Out of Chekhov’s Shorts is an exhilarating, fun and accessible romp through some of the best of Chekhov’s short stories including The Lady with the Little Dog, The Chemist’s Wife, At a Summer Villa, An Avenger and The Bear.

These wonderful hymns to the absurdity of everyday life, are by turns hilarious, romantic, poignant, odd and memorable. They hold the mirror up to the half-comic, half-painful experience of love and relationships and create a world in which the tender and the grotesque are inextricably linked. Ludicrous situations and larger than life characters abound in an evening that simply cannot be missed!

Featuring a Tony Award-winning performance from host of the The Late Late Show, James Corden, the hilarious West End and Broadway hit One Man, Two Guvnors returns to cinemas to mark National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday.

Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood, now in Brighton to collect £6,000 from his fiancée’s dad. But Roscoe is really his sister Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers.

Holed up at The Cricketers’ Arms, the permanently ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a second job with one Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from the police and waiting to be re-united with Rachel. To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two guvnors apart.  Simple.

Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) and directed by Vicky Jones, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life.

Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose.

The Fitzwilliam String Quartet: Shostakovitch Inspired!

    Theatr Brycheiniog

    Live Music | Cerddoriaeth Fyw

This exciting Music, Words and Live Art event with music painter Maryleen Schiltkamp and the Fitzwilliam String Quartet promises to be a unique experience!  Maryleen will paint on canvas, live on stage in response to the Fitzwilliam String Quartet’s performance of Shostakovich’s 10th String Quartet. The quartet will also play Shostakovich’s 11th String Quartet and there will be readings from the composer’s diaries and memoirs.   Music painting is an exciting new performance art, combining live music with artistic creations on canvas.  The live painting on stage will follow and literally illustrate the musical movement and shapes heard and the colour of sound.

The Fitzwilliam is now one of the longest established string quartets in the world and achieved international recognition as a result of its members’ personal friendship with Dmitri Shostakovich and their subsequent championing of his string quartets following his death. Shostakovich entrusted them with the Western premières of the last three quartets and they became the first ever group to perform and record all fifteen.

It was 4am. I then changed the name of a WhatsApp I was a part of to COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 because I had been thinking a lot about how 1999 was the best year of my life and also about how much I hate myself sometimes. Ever since he discovered the stories of his heroes Paul had known for a fact that he was a God or King in waiting. After keeping his identity secret for twenty-three years he finally confessed all to his doctor who told him that he had Bi-Polar Manic Depression and that it would kill him before his thirtieth birthday unless he agreed to take the metal pill.
It should have been an easy decision. Why wouldn’t he choose any life over death? But what if the medication stopped him from living out his destiny to be a God?
Challenging perceptions of what it is to live with mental illness, Gods & Kings is a bracingly honest and often hugely funny real-life story.

Concerto / Enigma Variations / Raymonda Act III

From The Royal Ballet’s classical origins in the works of Marius Petipa, to the home-grown choreographers who put British ballet on the world stage, this mixed programme highlights the versatility of the Company.

Petipa’s Raymonda Act III is Russian classical ballet summarized in one act, full of sparkle and precise technique, while Ashton’s Enigma Variations is quintessentially British in every way – from its score by Elgar and period designs by Julia Trevelyan Oman, to Ashton’s signature style, the essence of British ballet. Concerto, MacMillan’s fusion of classical technique with a contemporary mind, completes a programme that shows the breadth of The Royal Ballet’s heritage.

    Hansard; noun
The official report of all parliamentary debates.

See two-time Olivier Award winners, Lindsay Duncan (Birdman, About Time) and Alex Jennings (The Lady in the Van, The Queen), in this brand-new play by Simon Wood, broadcast live from the National Theatre in London.

It’s a summer’s morning in 1988 and Tory politician Robin Hesketh has returned home to the idyllic Cotswold house he shares with his wife of 30 years, Diana. But all is not as blissful as it seems. Diana has a stinking hangover, a fox is destroying the garden, and secrets are being dug up all over the place. As the day draws on, what starts as gentle ribbing and the familiar rhythms of marital scrapping quickly turns to blood-sport.

Don’t miss this witty and devastating portrait of the governing class, directed by Simon Godwin (NT Live: Antony & Cleopatra, Twelfth Night) and part of National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday season.

    Based on Faldum
A fairy tale by Hermann Hesse
    Age: 6 +

On the day of the famous annual fair, the town of Faldum receives an unexpected visit. A wanderer offers to grant a wish to anyone who wants one. Before long, the city is transformed. Mansions stand where mud huts once squatted, and beggars ride around in horse drawn carriages. And one man wishes to be turned into a mountain.

Written and performed by former Glastonbury Poetry Slam Champion Toby Thompson, I Wish I was a Mountain uses rhyme, live music, and just a smattering of metaphysical philosophy to boldly reimagine Hermann Hesse’s classic fairy-tale.

Do we really need the things that we need? What do mountains feel? How did time begin?
Adults are kindly requested to leave all answers to these questions at the door. Children, come as you are.

“Stunning … A profound show that reveals Thompson to be a star in the making … few shows have been so entrancing” The Guardian

For centuries, the arts in Russia were dominated by the Orthodox Church, whose power was only curtailed by Peter the Great. By the end of the 18th century, the arts had begun to flourish, but were heavily westernized and subject to court patronage. This lecture tells the story of how native artists, composers and writers broke away from the court in the 19th century in order to forge a cultural identity that was truly Russian.  Emerging from obscurity on the eve of twentieth century, the cultural explosion on the eve of the 1917 Revolution then brought Russian art into the international arena in spectacular fashion.

Ensemble Cymru presents a rare opportunity to experience a live performance of Schubert’s Octet for wind and strings.  Comprising 6 distinctive movements, the work showcases a composer with a unique flair for captivating melodies and harmonies.  To complement this work, Ensemble Cymru has commissioned a tribute to Schubert from Welsh composer, John Metcalf.   With its dreamy beauty, drawing inspiration from the beautiful Welsh folk melody, Bugeilio’r Gwenith Gwyn, Metcalf creates a fitting contemporary testament to Schubert’s lyrical brilliance.

    Present Laughter
    by Noël Coward

Matthew Warchus directs Andrew Scott (BBC’s Sherlock, Fleabag) in Noël Coward’s provocative comedy Present Laughter.

As he prepares to embark on an overseas tour, star actor Garry Essendine’s colourful life is in danger of spiralling out of control. Engulfed by an escalating identity crisis as his many and various relationships compete for his attention, Garry’s few remaining days at home are a chaotic whirlwind of love, sex, panic and soul-searching.

Captured live from The Old Vic in London, Present Laughter is a giddy and surprisingly modern reflection on fame, desire and loneliness.

    It's A Wonderful Life

    Theatr Brycheiniog

    Drama | Drama

Inspired by the classic American film, It's a Wonderful Life: a live radio play is performed as a 1940s live radio broadcast in front of a studio audience. With the help of an ensemble of six actors and a live foley artist, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds as he considers ending his life one fateful Christmas Eve. It will take help from a lovable angel, Clarence, to show George what life would be like if he hadn’t been born for George to have a change of heart and understand the true spirit of the holidays.

With director Joe Harmston at the helm (creator of Murder On Air, a staged version of Agatha Christie’s three extant radio plays which played to packed houses all over the UK), with live music and a cast of six actors bringing the town of Bedford Falls to life, Lighthouse Theatre presents this ingenious staging of a timeless classic film and seasonal favourite.

“preserves the heart of darkness of Capra’s fable making it’s faux-radio version a compelling Christmas showpiece” Time Out

“It’s a wonderful night. Bringing new meaning and fantastic new sound to the heart-warming story of good will and good cheer in the face of adversity”

Roger Askew: The Origins of our English Christmas

    Theatr Brycheiniog

    Spoken Word | Darlithiau

The origins of our English Christmas stretch far back into European history, combining the pagan traditions of the Roman and Scandinavian winter festivals. Only in the 4th century AD did the Christian Church start to celebrate the birth of Christ. Since then these different cultures have co-existed, changing as the social and political landscape changed music, art and folk customs associated with the season have all evolved, producing a rich tapestry of imagery and events that have appealed to every strata in our society. This lecture explores in words, images and music the various strands, pagan and religious, that have created the one festival in our country that touches everyone.
