'Breeding Boxers on the Breadline'
In the deprived valleys of the 1930s, boxing was more than just a sport; it was a way out of poverty. Merthyr-born Cuthbert Taylor, now seen as one of the best boxers of his generation, should have had the opportunity to fight for a British title, but was denied this chance because of the colour of his skin.
Multi-award winning Theatr na nÓg’s new show introduces your children to themes such as:
Life in working class valleys’ communities in the 1920s-40s Institutional racism, immigration and colonialism.
Be a part of our Autumn project and one of the many schools we work with to support the delivery of the Curriculum for Wales in a creative and fun way. This is our 35th year creating unique, high quality theatre for schools, currently in partnership with Swansea Museum, the National Waterfront Museum and Technocamps. Developing and supporting young people to be ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the World.

LIVE SCREENINGS
We feel extremely lucky that we get to bring the best of theatre, ballet and opera to you, our wonderful audiences. Our live screenings are always so beautifully breath taking and often thought provoking too. We have been blessed with big names at an affordable price, you will get so wrapped up in the magic of the moment you will forget that it’s a screening… don’t just take our word for it, come and enjoy the best of theatre from the National Theatre in London shown right here in the comfort of Theatr B!
“National Theatre Live brings the best of British theatre to a cinema screen near you. We film our plays in front of a live theatre audience, but optimise everything for the big screen so it’s the next best thing to being there.
The actors on stage deliver their performances as they normally would any other night. But to make sure our audiences watching in cinema have the best seat in the house, we tailor the position of our cameras to capture each production and work closely with technical teams to make sure every element on stage such as lighting, hair and make-up look fantastic on the big screen.” - National Theatre Live
Educational resources
Theatre gives audiences the opportunity to become immersed in stories about characters from every imaginable background, showing children how to appreciate many different kinds of people and how to recognise other people's point of view. This can equip us to relate to people from different times, countries and cultures all of which encourages personal empathy and cultural understanding.
From a very young age, children use their imagination to create imaginary worlds and act out stories. Theatre is a continuation of this need to express ourselves and by engaging in live performance we give ourself an opportunity to continue our development of self-expression and creativity. Visit our What's On page for an up to date listing of our forthcoming shows.
The performing arts also teach children how to think creatively through imagination. Creative thinking is essential for a critical ability to create solutions to problems. By developing dance, acting and music skills children also learn how to communicate in a variety of different ways, some of which enable a place to express themselves that they may not find anywhere else. We have a number of excellent community groups who would love you to get involved and give your child the opportunity to learn a new skill.
MAKE A BOOKING
Taking your family or class to see a live show is definitely an exciting, memorable experience and contributes to a positive learning experience in so many ways. If you would like to make a class or group booking please download our Schools Booking Form or contact our Box Office to discuss what you might need and how we can help.
Making theatre visits the norm helps to break down the barriers that often limit attendance, such as a lack of interest, a lack of awareness or a perceived elitism of the arts. By bringing your children to our theatre you have the opportunity to ignite a spark of interest, open up new worlds and maybe even find the next stage director, technician, costume designer, actor or writer!
TEACHERS GO FREE
Up to 90% of your costs can be covered with the ACW Go and See Fund, and we can help you apply for the fund. Please note that the fund is currently closed due to the pandemic.
We have:
- Easy coach drop off and parking
- Teachers can come free (see below for more info)
- Delicious Llanfaes Dairy ice Cream which can be pre-ordered and dairy free options are available too.
Don't forget to tag us on social media in any photos of your visit.
AVAILABLE RESOURCES
Theatre is a unique, immersive learning experience for audiences of any age. At Theatr Brycheiniog we believe that theatre should be an inclusive experience for everyone and welcome all ages to be a part of our audience. We also have a wide range of resources for you to download or print off to support your learning activities, either as part of your theatre experience or as a separate activity.
SEN & ACCESSIBILITY
We want to do all we can to make your visit as easy as possible. We have a number of shows that also perform 'relaxed performances'. During a relaxed performance, house lights are left on low and strobe lighting may be removed. Loud noises or explosions are either taken out entirely or reduced. The audience is free to go in and out as needed and latecomer rules are relaxed. Making noise during the performance is not discouraged. There are additional staff members on hand to assist as required and the cast and crew has awareness training before the performance.
For more information on our accessibility or to discuss any additional needs your group may have, please contact our Box Office. Further details about our accessibility can be found here.
