What makes Theatr Brycheiniog so family friendly?

Theatres are not traditionally seen as a baby or child friendly space but here at Theatr Brycheiniog we are on a mission to change that.

Our programme regularly includes shows for younger audiences and we do our best to make sure that we provide the ideal space for your family to feel comfortable and enjoy some live theatre. These shows are also listed as ‘relaxed performances’, this means that not only do we ‘relax’ the conventional rules for our audience but it means you can ‘relax’ and enjoy the performance too.

Here’s our family friendly FAQ’s!

Are my children too young to enjoy live theatre?

Creativity and imagination are essential for babies and children to understand the world around them. Theatre also gives us the opportunity to escape into new places and see things from a different perspective. Theatres definitely feel like magical spaces and can help create special memories!

What if we make a noise?
During shows for a younger audience making noise during the performance is not discouraged. If you need to get up and walk around this is okay.

We also do the following to try and make sure our youngest audience members and their carers have a positive experience:

House lights are also left on low and strobe lighting may be removed.
Loud noises or explosions are either taken out entirely or reduced.
The audience is free to go in and out as needed and latecomer rules are relaxed, we also open earlier to give everyone plenty of time to get to their seats.
There are additional staff members on hand to assist as required and the cast and crew has awareness training before the performance.
Audiences for these relaxed performances are also more tolerant because everyone understands the need for a bit of space.

What if I don’t speak welsh and the show is welsh language?
Our shows are engaging on so many levels, there is often singing, dancing and lots of fun going on so not knowing the language doesn’t mean you won’t be able to enjoy the show.

Are there any baby changing facilities available?
Our ground floor female and ground floor disabled toilets both have baby changing facilities. We hope to introduce this in the male toilets also.

Is there anywhere I can leave my pram or pushchair?
We create a buggy parking area in our studio but recommend you take all valuables with you.

Do you welcome breastfeeding?
We absolutely do. We even chose our cafe chairs with this in mind! Theatres are actually a great space for breastfeeding as they are low lit with quiet areas where you can settle with your baby.
