Tomos Williams: Blodeugerdd - The Great Welsh Songbook

    Theatr Brycheiniog

    Live Music | Cerddoriaeth Fyw

Trumpeter Tomos Williams' new project re-imagining music from the Welsh folk tradition, named 'Blodeugerdd / The Great Welsh Songbook' comprises a stellar line-up of Welsh jazz musicians: Huw Warren (piano) Paula Gardiner (bass) and Mark O'Connor (drums), create an A-list Welsh jazz rhythm section who are joined by Rachel Musson (tenor sax), and the brilliant young vocalist Eadyth Crawford, who sings in Welsh, alongside Tomos on trumpet.

'Blodeugerdd' means 'Anthology' in Welsh, while the 'Great Welsh Songbook' moniker is a play on the 'Great American Songbook' title which provides hundreds of jazz 'standards' and is the foundation of many modern jazz compositions. 'Blodeugerdd' showcase new arrangements of Welsh folk melodies in the European jazz tradition – drawing inspiration from Poland to Italy, France to Finland. Think ECM - jazz with plenty of room for improvisation and deep grooves, then think again.

The bands inaugural tour in the autumn of 2025 saw them performing at Aberystwyth, Mold, Hollyhead and Cardiff, to great acclaim. In 2026 Blodeugerdd will perform new music at, and commissioned by the Aberystwyth Music Festival as well as performing at The National Eisteddfod of Wales in North Pembrokeshire.

    Tomos Williams – trumpet

    Eadyth Crawford – vocals

    Rachel Musson – tenor sax

    Brecon Town

Join Emma Hayes, one of Brecon’s White Badge Town Tour Guides, for a short walk through the historic market town of Brecon.

Brecon has roots stretching back to the Iron Age, with nearby hillforts like Pen-y-Crug reflecting its early tribal settlements. During the Roman era, a fort at nearby Y Gaer marked its strategic importance, and in the 11th century, the Normans established a castle that spurred the town’s development. Brecon became a religious centre with the founding of a priory that later became Brecon Cathedral, and it also played a key role in Wales’s rich Nonconformist tradition. In the Georgian era, the town prospered as an administrative and commercial hub, with elegant buildings and improved infrastructure. Brecon also has a proud military history, notably as the home of the South Wales Borderers, famed for their role at Rorke’s Drift in 1879; their legacy lives on at the town’s Regimental Museum of The Royal Welsh.

A performance by In Echo with readings by Horatio Clare.

The ancient Salt Road road between Lüneburg and Lübeck, walked by Bach on his way to meet Buxtehude, has existed beyond memory. It was a vital artery for transporting the ‘white gold’ upon which the wealth of the region depended. This concert explores the idea of journeys real and imagined with music by Bach, Buxtehude, Brade, Schütz, Walter and Isaac. Woven into this are readings by Horatio Clare from his book Something of his Art, written after Horatio was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 to walk the entirety of Bach’s original route. The concert includes the premiere of a new work by Silas Wollston entitled “White Gold”.

    ·         Gawain Glenton - cornetto/director

    ·         Bojan Cicic - violin

Brecon Baroque Festival 2026 - Ian Bostridge & Fretwork celebrate Dowland

    Brecon Cathedral

    Live Music | Cerddoriaeth Fyw

John Dowland was not only the finest lutenist of his age, he was also, along with Henry Purcell, Britten and Lennon & McCartney, one of the all-time greatest song writers in the English language. He died 400 years ago in 1626. In 1604, he published the extraordinary collection of music for viols and lute called ‘Lachrimae’. Before a series of wonderfully lively galliards, many drawn from his songs, Dowland presents a transcendental journey based on his most famous song, ‘Flow my teares’. The falling 4th emblem is subjected to intense scrutiny and transformation, with a sequence that maps a voyage from despair to hope, from falling to rising, from minor to major.

As Dowland says in his dedication to Queen Anne of Denmark: And though the title doth promise teares, unfit guests in these ioyfull times, yet no doubt pleasant are the teares which Musicke weepes, neither are teares shed alwayes in sorrow, but sometime in ioy and gladnesse.

His four books of songs were some of the most popular publications of their day, and the first book in particular contains some of his most famous and memorable songs.

    ·         Ian Bostridge - tenor

    ·         Kristiina Watt - lute

    ·         Fretwork: Emilia Benjamin, Jonathan Rees, Joanna Levine, Sam Stadlen & Richard Boothby

Black RAT Productions and Blackwood Miners’ Institute present

A new comedy by Richard Tunley

Starring ZOËDAVIES, JEMIMA NICHOLAS, OLIVIA EDWARDS & KATE POWELL

Hot on the heels of Dai Cula: Prince of the Valleys, Black RAT Productions returns with a riotous new comedy where Jane Austen collides headfirst with modern South Wales.

Austen-and-Bridgerton obsessive Lizzie Bennet dreams of classier times - but keeping hold of that fantasy is difficult when her family is on the brink of collapse.

While Mam is living her best life in Spain, Lizzie is left holding the fort as her sisters unravel around her. Lydia has turned full Bridezilla over the wedding of the century, Jane is struggling with her own fragile marriage, Kitty is threatening to boycott the big day, and Mary? Mary went to Uni… and hasn’t been back since.

As the wedding day hurtles closer, tensions rise, secrets spill, and family pride collides with very modern prejudices.

Performed in Black RAT’s signature high-energy style, this physical comedy is brilliantly bonkers!

    Theatr Brycheiniog

    Opera | Opera

Mid Wales Opera presents a full evening of Italian opera, opening with Puccini’s brilliant, one-act comedy Gianni Schicchi, one of the greatest and most sublime of all Italian comic operas.

The greedy relatives of the dead Buoso Donati mourn his passing, though in truth, they’re far more interested in the contents of his will. On learning that they have all inherited nothing, Lauretta, whose engagement to Donati’s nephew Rinuccio is now in jeopardy, persuades her father, the wily Gianni Schicchi, to help them. But Schicchi has his own ingenious solution to the problem and as his plans come to fruition all hell breaks loose amongst the relatives…

Brimming with energy, with a fast-moving plot full of twists, turns and madcap ensembles, Puccini’s gloriously melodic score includes one of his best-loved arias “O mio babbino caro”. This jewel of a piece is followed by a second half feast of popular Italian music presented by MWO’s 15-strong company of singers and musicians.
