Spotlight On: Hilary Davis

We have another blog entry! This week we have the lovely Hilary, Hilary is a massive part of our theatre as a board member. Hilary is a Theatre Professional with over 25 years of experience. Working at Oxford School of Drama and Bristol Old Vic as Arts Administrator for the Education and Outreach department, she then went onto run her own Company Myrtle Theatre. She now runs her own holiday let and works part–time in the Sustainable Tourism Department of the National Park and is a Park ambassador. We asked Hilary to tell us a little bit about herself and her involvement in Theatr Brycheiniog.
Can you tell us about your involvement as a board member with Theatr Brycheiniog?
I am one of the newest board members at Theatr Brycheiniog so I am still learning the ropes as this is my first board role. It is wonderful to work with a group of people who have so much experience - I want to learn!
What does your involvement Theatr Brycheiniog include?
Attending board meetings and sub-committee meetings - and attending as many events at the theatre as possible to experience first hand how this wonderful building engages with the community.
How many years have you been on the board and what inspired you to join?
Most of my adult life has been spent working in theatres or for theatre companies. Two years ago I saw an opportunity to join the board and to contribute to something I really care about.
What is it about Theatr Brycheiniog, that you feel is so valuable for the local community?
For me the most valuable thing is that Theatr Brycheiniog's doors are open to enjoy a good cup of coffee in a friendly, creative environment, or to wander through the latest exhibition, or to browse through the brochure and book a show, or to attend classes / events – it is a space that is there for everyone.
How have you adapted as a board member during the pandemic?
We've continued to connect remotely for board meetings and catch ups – often frustrated by rural broadband! But you can't beat the energy of being around a table with the other board members - hopefully it won't be long now!
What are you most looking forward to about the reopening of Theatr Brycheiniog?
Going to see something that's not streamed or that can be paused to watch at any time but where there is a company working together towards an experience shared by an audience watching a unique performance together.
As an audience member what has been your favourite show that you have seen at Theatr Brycheiniog?
The Stick Maker Tales - National Theatre of Wales. A beautifully written and performed one man show with relevance for the local rural community. So good I saw it twice!
How interesting! What a great insight thank you Hilary. We are extremely grateful for you taking the time to give such brilliant answers.
The organisation has undertaken a review of its governance and now has a new rotation of serving Board Members, we will also need to keep recruiting for new candidates as we need to underpin the new terms of office. We are therefore seeking to appoint new, non-executive members prepared to bring and share their high-level experience and their love of the arts. At this time we would be particularly interested to hear from those whose skills and backgrounds lie in:
· The arts and artistic programming, diversity and inclusivity, finance and legal issues, community outreach and engagement.

Thank you for reading! We love that you love the Theatr as much as we do... It’s an amazing place after all! To stay up to date with what is happening at Theatr Brycheiniog sign up to our newsletter or follow us on social media!
As a registered charity working to serve the community, the Theatr is always in need of extra support, whether for improvements to the building and to support community projects. Please visit our Support Us page to see how you can help.
