Are you ready to embark on a thrilling journey into the captivating world of opera? Prepare to be enchanted by the harmonious blend of music and drama. Join us on Saturday the 23rd of March when our stage will be thrown into magnificent creative chaos with Verdi’s Macbeth. The one and only Mid Wales Opera will be performing on our stage, as the last venue on the MainStages Macbeth tour. Are you intrigued? Please keep reading to find out more… 

So what is the opera about?

Follow the tragic journey of Macbeth, a valiant general, as he succumbs to his wife's persuasion, embarking on a ruthless quest for the Scottish throne. Immerse yourself in Verdi's magnificent score, featuring sweeping melodies, intricate harmonies, and a psychologically thrilling narrative. Experience a modern twist with the haunting chorus of refugees in Act 4, adding a contemporary layer to this timeless tale. Mid Wales Opera is dedicated to crafting and performing fully-staged, intimate touring opera productions, taking opera to new audiences in theatres and spaces rarely graced by live performances.

Meet the Main Cast

Macbeth: Jean-Kristof Bouton 

Jean-Kristof Bouton was born in Canada and is now based in London. He spent many years as soloist with the National Opera Lasi, Romania, where his roles included Silvio Pagliacci, Alfio Cavalleria Rusticana, Marcello La bohème, Belcore L’Elisir d’Amore, Figaro Il Barbiere di Siviglia and title role Don Giovanni. He now appears regularly across Europe with roles including Escamillo Carmen (Nice, Paris, Seville), Moussol Si j’etais roi, Monterone Rigoletto and Mercutio Roméo et Juliette (all in Toulon). In the UK he has sung Alvaro Il viaggio a Reims (ETO), Charlie Three Decembers, Scarpia Tosca and Belcore L’elisir d’amore (Diva Opera). Future plans include Raimbaud Le Comte Ory in Quebec.

Lady Macbeth: Mari Wyn Williams

Welsh Soprano Mari Wyn Williams is a Graduate of Wales International Academy of Voice where she studied with Dennis O’Neill. She was a finalist at both the London Wagner competition and Elizabeth Connell competition for Dramatic Sopranos in Sydney, Australia. Roles include Ellen Orford Peter Grimes (Kensington Symphony Orchestra and the Epiphoni Consort), Woglinde Das Rheingold (Longborough Festival Opera), Fiordiligi Così fan tutte (Swansea City Opera), Musetta La bohème (MWO), title role Tosca (Opera Project), Helmwige Die Walküre (Grange Park Opera), and Ortlinde and ‘cover’ Brünnhilde The Valkyrie (ENO co-production with the Met, New York, directed by Richard Jones and conducted by Martyn Brabbins and Anthony Negus).

Macduff: Robyn Lyn Evans

Tenor Robyn Lyn Evans was raised in Pont-rhyd-y-groes, Ceredigion, but now lives in Machynlleth. He graduated from Trinity College Carmarthen where he was awarded the Stuart Burrows bursary and from the Royal College of Music, London. Robyn started singing in the Eisteddfod competitions of Wales and highlights include Llangollen International Young Singer of the Year, Osborne Roberts Memorial Prize and David Ellis Memorial Prize. Previous MWO appearances include Lensky Eugene Onegin, Luigi Il tabarro, Rodolfo La bohèmeand countless opera galas. He is delighted to be given the opportunity to sing Macduff for Mid Wales Opera and to return to his ‘local’ opera company!

Banquo: Emyr Wyn Jones

Born and raised in Aberdare, Welsh bass baritone Emyr Wyn Jones trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio. In 2023 he made his role debut as Dulcamara L’elisir d’amore (Longborough Festival Opera) and covered the role of Aye Akhnaten (English National Opera). Other engagements have included Scottish Opera, Wexford Festival, Opera North, Grange Park Opera and the Mediterranean Opera Festival. Roles have included Figaro Le Nozze do Figaro, Colline La bohème, Papageno The Magic Flute and Leporello/Masetto Don Giovanni. Most recently he covered and performed Don Basilio The Barber of Seville for Scottish Opera. For MWO: Talpa Il tabarro, Colline La bohème, Sacristan Tosca and Cadmus Semele.

Lady-in-waiting: Rebecca Afonwy-Jones

Born in Mid Wales, Rebecca Afonwy-Jones began her career as a Scottish Opera Emerging Artist. Other companies with which she has worked include English Touring Opera, Grange Park Opera, If Opera, Longborough Festival Opera, Opera North, Welsh National Opera, West Green House Opera, Opera Project and Festival Opera, New Zealand. She made her BBC Proms debut singing Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music, and concert engagements have further included performances with Britten Sinfonia, Norwegian Wind Ensemble, London Mozart Players, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. Recordings include Hugh Wood’s Beginnings for Resonus Classics, selected as a Sunday Times CD of the Week. For Mid Wales Opera she has sung Mother/Witch Hansel and Gretel.

Who are Mid Wales Opera?

Mid Wales Opera’s mission is to create and perform accessible opera on an intimate scale, enabling our audiences to experience opera differently. The scale at which we work enables us to fulfill our ambitions to: Stage thought-provoking, moving, and high-quality productions in smaller venues across Wales and England where fully staged professional live opera is rarely shown, reaching audiences who would not otherwise be able to experience it.
